6.12Theywentoutandpreachedthatpeopleshouldrepent.6.13Theycastoutmanydemons,andanointedmanywithoilwhoweresick,
andhealedthem.6.14KingHerodheardthis,forhisnamehadbecomeknown,andhesaid,“JohntheBaptizerhasrisenfromthedead,and
thereforethesepowersareatworkinhim.”6.15Butotherssaid,“HeisElijah.”Otherssaid,“Heisaprophet,orlikeoneoftheprophets.”6.16
ButHerod,whenheheardthis,said,“ThisisJohn,whomIbeheaded.Hehasrisenfromthedead.”6.17ForHerodhimselfhadsentoutand
arrestedJohn,andboundhiminprisonforthesakeofHerodias,hisbrotherPhilip’swife,forhehadmarriedher.6.18ForJohnsaidtoHerod,
“Itisnotlawfulforyoutohaveyourbrother’swife.”6.19Herodiassetherselfagainsthim,anddesiredtokillhim,butshecouldn’t,6.20for
HerodfearedJohn,knowingthathewasarighteousandholyman,andkepthimsafe.Whenheheardhim,hedidmanythings,and
heheardhimgladly.
6.21Thenaconvenientdaycame,thatHerodonhisbirthdaymadeasupperforhisnobles,thehighofficers,andthechiefmenofGalilee.
6.22WhenthedaughterofHerodiasherselfcameinanddanced,shepleasedHerodandthosesittingwithhim.Thekingsaidtotheyoung
lady,“Askmewhateveryouwant,andIwillgiveittoyou.”6.23Hesworetoher,“Whateveryoushallaskofme,Iwillgiveyou,uptohalf
ofmykingdom.”
6.24Shewentout,andsaidtohermother,“WhatshallIask?”
Shesaid,“TheheadofJohntheBaptizer.”
6.25Shecameinimmediatelywithhastetotheking,andasked,“IwantyoutogivemerightnowtheheadofJohntheBaptizer
onaplatter.”
6.26Thekingwasexceedinglysorry,butforthesakeofhisoaths,andofhisdinnerguests,hedidn’twishtorefuseher.6.27Immediatelythe
kingsentoutasoldierofhisguard,andcommandedtobringJohn’shead,andhewentandbeheadedhimintheprison,6.28andbroughthis
headonaplatter,andgaveittotheyounglady;andtheyoungladygaveittohermother.
6.29Whenhisdisciplesheardthis,theycameandtookuphiscorpse,andlaiditinatomb.
6.30TheapostlesgatheredthemselvestogethertoJesus,andtheytoldhimallthings,whatevertheyhaddone,andwhatevertheyhad
taught.6.31Hesaidtothem,“Youcomeapartintoadesertedplace,andrestawhile.”Forthereweremanycomingandgoing,andthey
hadnoleisuresomuchastoeat.6.32Theywentawayintheboattoadesertedplacebythemselves.6.33They[*]sawthemgoing,andmany
recognizedhimandranthereonfootfromallthecities.Theyarrivedbeforethemandcametogethertohim.6.34Jesuscameout,saw
agreatmultitude,andhehadcompassiononthem,becausetheywerelikesheepwithoutashepherd,andhebegantoteachthemmany
things.6.35Whenitwaslateintheday,hisdisciplescametohim,andsaid,“Thisplaceisdeserted,anditislateintheday.6.36Sendthem
away,thattheymaygointothesurroundingcountryandvillages,andbuythemselvesbread,fortheyhavenothingtoeat.”
6.37Butheansweredthem,“Yougivethemsomethingtoeat.”
Theyaskedhim,“Shallwegoandbuytwohundreddenarii[*]worthofbread,andgivethemsomethingtoeat?”
6.38Hesaidtothem,“Howmanyloavesdoyouhave?Gosee.”
Whentheyknew,theysaid,“Five,andtwofish.”
6.39Hecommandedthemthateveryoneshouldsitdowningroupsonthegreengrass.6.40Theysatdowninranks,byhundredsand
byfifties.6.41Hetookthefiveloavesandthetwofish,andlookinguptoheaven,heblessedandbroketheloaves,andhegavetohis
disciplestosetbeforethem,andhedividedthetwofishamongthemall.6.42Theyallate,andwerefilled.6.43Theytookuptwelvebaskets
fullofbrokenpiecesandalsoofthefish.6.44Thosewhoatetheloaveswere[*]fivethousandmen.
6.45Immediatelyhemadehisdisciplesgetintotheboat,andtogoaheadtotheotherside,toBethsaida,whilehehimselfsentthe
multitudeaway.6.46Afterhehadtakenleaveofthem,hewentupthemountaintopray.
6.47Wheneveninghadcome,theboatwasinthemiddleofthesea,andhewasaloneontheland.6.48Seeingthemdistressedinrowing,for
thewindwascontrarytothem,aboutthefourthwatchofthenighthecametothem,walkingonthesea,andhewouldhavepassed
bythem,6.49butthey,whentheysawhimwalkingonthesea,supposedthatitwasaghost,andcriedout;6.50fortheyallsawhim,and
weretroubled.Butheimmediatelyspokewiththem,andsaidtothem,“Cheerup!ItisI![*]Don’tbeafraid.”6.51Hegotintotheboatwith
them;andthewindceased,andtheywereveryamazedamongthemselves,andmarveled;6.52fortheyhadn’tunderstoodaboutthe
loaves,buttheirheartswerehardened.
6.53Whentheyhadcrossedover,theycametolandatGennesaret,andmooredtotheshore.6.54Whentheyhadcomeoutoftheboat,
immediatelythepeoplerecognizedhim,6.55andranaroundthatwholeregion,andbegantobringthosewhoweresick,ontheirmats,
towheretheyheardhewas.6.56Whereverheentered,intovillages,orintocities,orintothecountry,theylaidthesickinthe
marketplaces,andbeggedhimthattheymighttouchjustthefringe[*]ofhisgarment;andasmanyastouchedhimweremadewell.

7.1ThenthePhariseesandsomeofthescribesgatheredtogethertohim,havingcomefromJerusalem.7.2Nowwhentheysawsomeofhis
discipleseatingbreadwithdefiled,thatisunwashed,hands,theyfoundfault.7.3(ForthePhariseesandalltheJews,don’teatunlessthey
washtheirhandsandforearms,holdingtothetraditionoftheelders.7.4Theydon’teatwhentheycomefromthemarketplaceunlessthey
bathethemselves,andtherearemanyotherthings,whichtheyhavereceivedtoholdto:washingsofcups,pitchers,bronzevessels,and
couches.)7.5ThePhariseesandthescribesaskedhim,“Whydon’tyourdiscipleswalkaccordingtothetraditionoftheelders,buteattheir
breadwithunwashedhands?”
7.6Heansweredthem,“WelldidIsaiahprophesyofyouhypocrites,asitiswritten,
‘Thispeoplehonorsmewiththeirlips,
buttheirheartisfarfromme.
7.7Buttheyworshipmeinvain,
teachingasdoctrinesthecommandmentsofmen.’
7.8“ForyousetasidethecommandmentofGod,andholdtightlytothetraditionofmen—thewashingofpitchersandcups,andyou
domanyothersuchthings.”7.9Hesaidtothem,“FullwelldoyourejectthecommandmentofGod,thatyoumaykeepyourtradition.7.10
ForMosessaid,‘Honoryourfatherandyourmother;’and,‘Hewhospeakseviloffatherormother,lethimbeputtodeath.’7.11Butyou
say,‘Ifamantellshisfatherorhismother,“WhateverprofityoumighthavereceivedfrommeisCorban[*],thatistosay,giventoGod”;’
7.12thenyounolongerallowhimtodoanythingforhisfatherorhismother,7.13makingvoidthewordofGodbyyourtradition,whichyou
havehandeddown.Youdomanythingslikethis.”
7.14Hecalledallthemultitudetohimself,andsaidtothem,“Hearme,allofyou,andunderstand.7.15Thereisnothingfromoutsideofthe
man,thatgoingintohimcandefilehim;butthethingswhichproceedoutofthemanarethosethatdefiletheman.7.16Ifanyonehasears
tohear,lethimhear!”[*]
7.17Whenhehadenteredintoahouseawayfromthemultitude,hisdisciplesaskedhimabouttheparable.7.18Hesaidtothem,“Areyou
alsowithoutunderstanding?Don’tyouperceivethatwhatevergoesintothemanfromoutsidecan’tdefilehim,7.19becauseitdoesn’t
gointohisheart,butintohisstomach,thenintothelatrine,thuspurifyingallfoods[*]?”7.20Hesaid,“Thatwhichproceedsoutoftheman,
thatdefilestheman.7.21Forfromwithin,outoftheheartsofmen,proceedevilthoughts,adulteries,sexualsins,murders,thefts,7.22
