Scotland,2014).Thisalsoimpliesthattheprofessionalidentityofteachersis
Hpersonallyshapedandconstructed;itisnotgenericallybestowed”(Scot-
land,2014,p.35).
Allinall,professionalidentityisconstructedatthenexusofatleastthree
areas:institutionalandpersonalbiographies,theparticipationindiscourse
communitiesandtheindividualagencyoftheteachersthemselves.These
maketeachers’professionalidentitiesrelational,multiple,dynamicandin-
dividuallyconstructed.
2.2LanguageTeacherAffiliation
Languageteacheraffiliation,insimplestterms,signifiesaperson’swilling-
nesstoteachaforeignlanguage(WTTFL)linkedwithaninternalidentification
withpursuinglanguageteachingasacareer.ThenotionofHwillingness”is
worthstressingbecauseprofessionalidentitymaynotbedevelopedunless
teachersarewillingtobepartofwhatlanguageteachinginvolves.Although
Hteachingalanguage”mayimplyidentificationswithteacherrolesorwith
thestrategiesthatbecometherepertoireofanyteacheronceheorsheenters
thejob,myinteresthereismorerelatedtoaffiliationinthesenseofthe
teacher’sinternalidentificationwiththeprofession,hisorherfocusonitsin-
trinsicvalue,personalcallingsorindividualimagesofwhatbelongingtothe
teachingcommunityinvolves.ItotallyagreewithKorthagen(2004,pp.86-
87)thattheteacher’scorequalitiescomefromtheinside,whilecompetencies
(oftendiscussedintheliteratureoncompetencymanagement),areacquired
fromtheoutside.Studiesonlanguageteachers’affiliationwiththeirprofes-
sioninformstudiesonprofessionalidentitybecausetheyshowwhetheror
notindividualsdecidetoembarkonalanguageteachingcareerandusethe
genresofteachingdiscoursethatothermembersofthesameprofessionin-
terpretasevidenceoftheirprofessionalmembership(Brownetal.,2005).In
otherwords,affiliationisaboutHideologicalinterpretations”(Aro,2016,p.28)
whichteachersemployfordescribingtheirteacherselves.Themostimpor-
tantofthesewillnowbediscussed,namelytheconceptsofprofessionalism,
ethicality,proximityandpositioning,imaginedcommunities,globalityandlocality,
tofinishupwithinvestment.
