Itisstillverymuchunclearhowtheprogressiontakesplacealthough
someassumptionscanbemaderelyingontheresearchaccumulatedon
thecognitivepsychologyofexpertiseindiversedomains(Hoffman1992,
1997,Chi,GlaserandFarr1988,Séguinot1989b,EricssonandSmith
1991,Feltovich,FordandHoffman1997,GreenandGilhooley1992).It
canbeexpectedthateachstageisinitselfaprocessofdevelopmentor
self-developmentofanindividualwhodeliberatelyseekstheexperience
oftranslation.Theprogressionfromonestagetothenextoneisprobably
aslowprocessleadingtoadevelopmentalshiftratherthanaquickjump.
Theoneaspectwhichisseenasnecessaryfordevelopmentthatallschol-
arsagreeuponisthepracticeoftranslationsincetranslationcompetence
iscommonlydefinedasexperience-derivedknowledge(PACTE2003).
Leavingthiscomplexissueasideasitwillbeperusedinthelatterchap-
tersofthisbook,letusfirstestablishhowtheprogressionfromtranslation
predispositiontoability,skill,competenceandexpertisebearsontheper-
ceptionofthepersoninvolved,thetranslator.
1.6.Thetranslator
Followingtherulesofmorphologyapersonwhodrivesisadriver,aper-
sonwhoreadsisareaderandapersonwhotranslatesisatranslator.Yet,
thewordtranslatorlikewriterisnotcommonlyassociatedwithanybody
whotranslatesorwritesandmorefrequentlyitismeanttorefertothe
nameofaprofession.
AsobservedbyMalakoffandHakuta(1991),
Translationistypicallyviewedasavaluableskillthatisavailableonly
tothehighlytrainedandlinguisticallysophisticatedbilingualswho
comeoutofinterpreterandtranslatortrainingschools.Itisnotaskill
thatisgenerallyconsideredtobewithintherepertoireofjustanybilin-
gual,muchlesschildren,muchlessminority-languagechildren.Yet,
studieshavefoundthatchildrencanbothinterpretandtranslatemateri-
alsthatarewithintheircomprehensionandvocabulary(Malakoffand
Hakuta1991:144).
Itseemsthenthattranslationasahumanskillisasociallymisunderstood
phenomenon.Ontheonehand,theskilloftranslationisgrantedtoaprac-
ticingtranslator,ontheotherhanditisexpectedofbilinguals(anybody
whocanusetwolanguagesforcommunication).Translationasaprofes-
sionalskillandtheprofessionaltranslatorhasbeenthefocusofinvestiga-
