possibletoclearlyunderstandthezonesofoverlapbetweendiferentdisci-
plinesasperhapsconflictualyetproductiveandreadilynegotiablezonesof
translation”(Bachmann-Medick,2008).
Ultimately,itisfromthisperspectivethatculturalstudies/Kulturwissen-
schafenhascometorecogniseitselfastranslationstudies.Notonlyculture
butalsoculturalstudiesitselfwasseentobe“anongoingtranslationen-
deavourduetotheproductionofrelationshipsandpossibilitiesofconnec-
tionsbetweendiferentsocialrealms,groups,fieldsofagency,institutions,
symbolicself-assertions,claimstopower,etc.”(Bachmann-Medick2008).
Inthesamevein,theversatileexpertonpostcolonialandcomparative
worldliteraturesRussellWestobservedthattranslationbecameacrucial
metaphorfor“transgressivehybridisationacrossdisciplinaryboundaries
whichproducesradicallynewpossibilitiesofknowledgeandcritiqueinthe
socialsciences”(2002,161).West’scoreideathattranslationis“anopera-
tionwhichestablishescontinuityacrossaspaceofdiscontinuity,making
heterogeneityproductiveforintellectualpursuit”(2002,161),wasparticu-
larlyinfluentialforculturalstudies,whichtooktoconductingits“transla-
tive,”interdisciplinaryoperations.Tus,thenotionoftranslationacquired
“aparadigmaticsignificanceforthemodesofexistenceofsubjectsacting
andworkingwithinincreasinglyhybridisedculturesinourlate-modern
times”(2002,174),theresultbeingthattranslationstudies“isperhapsthe
onlyfieldinthehumanandsocialsciencesthatseemsNOTtofocuson
theoreticalquestionsofitsown”(Singh2007,73).AccordingtoWest,
translationasanoperationwhichisalwaysalreadyatworkintheconsti-
tutionalhybridityofcultureasaprocess,andthusinherentlyadynamic
forceinthedisciplinaryidentityofculturalstudiesitself,continues,inthe
contemporarymoment,todemandinterdisciplinaryre-configurationsof
ourwaysofknowing[Ź].(West2002,174)
AsDilekDizdarhasrightlypointedout,broadeningthescopeofthe
conceptoftranslationisprofitabletobothtranslationstudiesandthe
humanitiesingeneral,asitencouragesscholarsofthesedisciplinesto
