Chapter4focusesonthediseasesandcorrespondingthreatscausedbycivilisation,
includingcivilisationdiseasesandtheresurgenceofinfectiousdiseases,epidemics,and
pandemics.Infectiousdiseases,includingHIVlAIDS,tuberculosis,andmalaria,account
for41%ofalldiseasesworldwide,eachkillingmillionsofpeople.Diseasesspreadby
microbes,suchassalmonellosis,Legionnaires)disease,Ebolavirusdisease,vascular
necrosis,anthrax,smallpox,foot-and-mouthdisease,WestNilefever,MRSA,andSARS,
arefrequentlymentionedinmediareports.Althoughabetterunderstandingofhow
virusesworkwillincreasethetreatmentoptionsformanydiseases,itwillalsoraise
anumberofnewproblems,inparticularthefactthatgenetically-modifiedvirusescan
beusedasweaponsbyterrorists.Itissuchcriminalthreatsthatconstitutethesubjectof
oneofthesubchaptersofthisbook.
ThesituationofPolandandPoleswithregardstoactualandpotentialthreatsisone
ofthekeyissuesinmanychaptersofthebook.Chapter5providesanoverviewofthe
financialconditionofthePolishsociety-inparticular,ofquestionsofsocialsecurity,
includingunemployment,homelessness,beggary,andpoverty.Eachsubchapteris
suppliedwiththelateststatisticsfromrecogniseddatabasesandreports.Asthesesources
indicate,ahighlevelofprosperitydoesnotalwaysresultinasenseofhappiness,justas
alowlevelofprosperitydoesnotnecessarilygiverisetodissatisfaction.Therelationship
betweenfinancialprosperityandhappinessisdiscussedinthefollowingsubchapter.
Microeconomicstatisticsonunemploymentarecomplementedwithadiscussionabout
unemploymentasamacro-socialfactorofvictimisationinChapter4.Unemployment
isoneofthebiggestsocio-economicandpoliticalproblemsfacedbymodernsocieties
today;itslevelisoneofthemainmeasuresoftheefficiencyofasocio-economicsystem,
andthebreadthofitsimpactcoversmanyspheresoflife.Formanycountriesofthe
EuropeanUnion,includingPoland,thetwentiethcenturyturnedouttobeaneraof
unemployment.Thetwenty-firstcentury,inturn,isatimeofautomation,which,onthe
onehand,willleadtoincreasedproductivityandastrongereconomyinthefuture,but
ontheotherhand,itwillforceunskilledandlow-wageworkerstogiveuptheircurrent
jobsandretraintoperformlabourlessaffectedbydisplacement.
Thechapterentitled“Developinganti-victimisationattitudesinroadtraffic”presents
thepsychologicalaspectsofanti-victimisationattitudesinroadtraffic,theextentof
victimisationofroadusers,androadsafetyissuesinthememberstatesoftheEuropean
Union.Twokindsofanti-victimisationattitudesofaparticipantinaroadtrafficsituation
canbedistinguishedinrelationtothethreatsposedbythelossthatapersonmight
experienceasaresultofthatsituationwithregardstocertainvaluestheyappreciate.
