Muchspaceisdevotedtosuicideasanextremeformofself-victimisation(Chapter8).
Onthebasisofresearchonattemptedsuicide,itcanbeclaimedthatinmanycasesthe
decisiontocommitsuicideisessentiallyachoicebetweenasituationthattheindividual
cannotcopewithandasituationthatrequiresnoeffortfromtheindividualtoregulate
theirattitudetowardsthesurroundingworld.Paradoxically,itisadecisiontoavoid
makingthedecisionsandchoicesthataccompanyhumanlife.Modernresearchprovides
datathatindicatethatthephenomenonofsuicideasameansofresolvingintrapsychic
conflictsisdeterminedbynumerouscircumstancesandfactors.Thereisampleevidence
thattheInternetintensifiesthetendencytowardsuicide;theimpunityofthewitnesses
toasuicideincreasesit.Mostwould-besuicidesatfirstjustbluff:theymerelywantto
sharetheirproblemswithotherpeople.However,iftheymanagetodrawtheattention
ofotherstothemselvesorreceiveencouragement,theymayreallykillthemselves.
Industrialdevelopmentresultinginincreasedemploymentandworkmechanisation,
aswellastheintroductionofnewtechnologies,areobjectivefactorsincreasingtheriskof
accidentsatwork.Thisissuealsodeservesattentionfromthepointofviewofvictimology
andisdescribedinChapter9.Theknowledgeoftheetiologyandsymptomology
ofaccidentsatworkhelpstoassessthecharacteroftheeventsandundertakepreventive
measures.
CompulsionisatermusedinitsstrictsensemainlyinAmericanpsychiatryto
describeobsessionsinthementalandpsychomotorspheres.Compulsionsmanifest
themselvesintheemergenceofanirresistibledesiretoperformanact,usuallyin
individualswithaweakenedmentalcontrolovertheiraspirations.Inabroadersense,
anyactivity,especiallywhenitinvolvesadverseconsequencesforindividuals,maybe
definedascompulsivebehaviour.Itisundertakenwhenanindividualsuffersfrom
aseriousdisorderofconsciouscontrolandisincapableoflimitingorpreventingcertain
typesofconduct.Suchbehavioursincludevarioustypesofaddictions,inparticular,
alcoholism,drugaddiction,andnicotinism.Besidestheseaddictions,Chapter10deals
withworkaholism,gamblingaddiction,andtherecentriseinaddictiontomodern
technology,includingtheInternet.Admittedly,addictiontoInternetusedoesnotcause
suchphysicalproblemsasdrugaddictionoralcoholismdo,butthesocialeffectsare
quitesimilar.Addictiontochatting,compulsivemailchecking,oranunrestraineddesire
tosurfthewebarebehaviourseligiblefortreatment.ThedifferencebetweenInternet
addictionandcomputeraddictionisthatanInternetaddictionissimplyakindof
acomputeraddiction.WhatistypicalofInternetusersisasenseofglobalcommunity,
freedom,andlackofborders.
Familypathologyisanexampleofathreattothepsychosocialsphererelatedtothe
attainmentofneedsandvalues,ties,identity,groupsolidarity,andasenseofexistence
keyfornormaldevelopment,especiallywithinunstablepolitical,economic,social,
