Factorssuchastheavailabilityofdataduetotheselectedsource,theirdegreeof

detailaswellasthecomplexityoftheexaminationlimitedthepossibilitytoquickly

updatethestudyresults,thereforetheyafectedthedeterminationofthetimeseries

fortheanalysis.MostdatawereretrievedfromtheEasyComextdatabaseon13Feb-

ruary2017.BearinginmindthedataupdatingrulesintheEurostatdatabase,the

scopeofavailabledatacoveredtheperiodfrom2004to2015.Tattimeserieswas

adoptedasthebasisfortheempiricalanalysis,theresultsofwhicharepresented

inChapters3,4and5.

TestudydividedtheEUMemberStatesintothefollowinggroups:[1]thenew

EU-10(theCzechRepublic,Latvia,Poland,Hungary,Slovakia,Slovenia,Romania,

Estonia,Lithuania,Bulgaria)1;[2]theEU-15(Germany,France,Belgium,Austria,

theNetherlands,theUnitedKingdom,Spain,Italy,Denmark,Portugal,Sweden,

Ireland,Finland,Luxembourg,Greece);[3]theEU-28-alltheMemberStatesof

theEUin2015,i.e.theEU-15,theEU-10,Cyprus,MaltaandCroatia.Inorderto

ensurepropertransparencyoftheanalysisandthecomparabilityofthecalculation

results,thestudyisbasedonacertainsimpliﬁcation.Teyear2004wasadoptedas

theinitialyearoftheanalysisforalloftheEU-10,eventhoughRomaniaandBul-

gariajoinedtheSEMafertheirformalaccessionin2007.

Datagrouping,analysisandpresentationbasedonthemaincategoriesofthe

SITCareawayforaclearanalysisofthemainbranchesoftheeconomywithin

whichtheIITexchangetakesplace.Teauthor’spreviousexperienceinanalysing

andpublishingtheresultsofresearchonIITwasfocusedonworkingwiththeCN

classiﬁcation.Here,however,wehaveasmanyas21sectionsoftheCN.Incom-

parisonwiththesixmajorcategoriesoftheSITC,itistoomuchtoclearlyillus-

tratestructuralchangeswithintheIITexchangeforsuchawiderangeofnational

economies(EU-10vs.EU-15).TesourcedatafromtheEUROSTATwasbased

onsixdigitcodes(CN6).Teiraggregation,inaccordancewiththemethodology

ofcalculatingIITuptothelevelof6mainSITCcategories,wasimplementedby

applyingtheUNTradeStatisticscorrespondencetables(https://unstats.un.org/unsd/

trade/classiﬁcations/correspondence-tables.asp).Teﬁnalandintermediategoods

havebeenclassiﬁedbythefollowingmethodology:BECIntermediateGoodsin

TradeStatistics(https://unstats.un.org/unsd/tradekb/Knowledgebase/50090/Inter-

mediate-Goods-in-Trade-Statistics).

Tedistinctionintheanalysisoffourgroupsofproductsaccordingtothelevel

oftechnologicaladvancement(Rawlab,LowTech,MidTech,HightTech)allowedto

1TeanalysisexcludesMaltaandCyprus;althoughtheyjoinedtheEUin2004,duetofactorssuch

asthesizeandnatureoftheireconomiesaswellasthegeographicaldistancetotheEU-10thosecoun-
