Introduction
Diminutivesareofendescribedasthemorphologicalmeansusedforex-
pressivepurposessuchascommunicatingdiferentsortsofemotions,attitudes,
connotations,andevaluations(Szymanek2010:202).Tatiswhydiminutivisa-
tionisofentreatedasaseparateareaofmorphology,referredtoasexpres-
sivelevaluativelafectivemorphology(seeBauer1997;Volek1987).Yet,Dressler
andBarbaresi(1994:55)introducethetermmorphopragmatics(characterised
asmorphologisedpragmatics),whichcanbedefinedasutheareaofthegeneral
pragmaticmeaningsofmorphologicalrules,thatis,oftheregularpragmatic
efectsproducedwhenmovingfromtheinputtotheoutputofamorphological
rule”.Teyalsoexplainthatuamorphologicalruleisrelevantformorphoprag-
maticsifitcontainsapragmaticvariablewhichcannotbesuppressedinthe
descriptionofitsmeaning”(DresslerandBarbaresi1994:55).
Whendiscussingdiminutiveforms,itisessentialtostressthecorrelation
betweensemantics,whichdealswiththemeaningofdiminutiveswithoutthe
context,andpragmatics,whichdealswiththeuseandfunctionofdiminu-
tiveswithincontext.DresslerandBarbaresi(1994:4)supportapragmaticview,
whichincludessemanticswithinpragmaticsasmeaningincontext.Neverthe-
less,astheydonotwanttoinvestigateareasofmorphologicalmeaningwhich
canbediscussedwithinmorphosemanticsonly,theybelievethatudespitethe
pragmaticbasisofsemanticsandtheimpossibilityofdrawingsharpbound-
aries—pragmaticsandsemanticscanbetreatedasseparatedisciplineswhich
complementandenricheachother”(seeLeech1983:6-7;Levinson1979:217-
218).Teyareoftheopinionthatsemanticsisuwhatremainsofmeaningif
allpragmaticvariables[ł]areignored”,whereaspragmaticsdealswithallthe
aspectsofmeaningdeterminedbytheintroductionofsuchvariables”(Dressler
