Inordertoconceptualizelanguageteachereducationmorecomprehensively,
Varghese,Morgan,JohnstonandJohnson(2005)argueforconceptsofidentity-
in-practicevs.identity-in-discourse.Thetermidentity-in-practicesignifieswhat
takesplaceinateacher’spractice,suchastheuseofparticularactivitiesand
tasksinrelationtoothers.Thetermidentity-in-discourseprimarilystandsfor
identitythatisbuiltdiscursivelywhichembracestheteacher’slanguage,the
employmentofcriticalreflexivity,andincludesaperson’sindividualaware-
ness,orattentiontothepoststructuralistconstructofpositioning.Clearly,
identity-in-practiceevokestheconceptsofA-identity(Wenger,1998),whereas
identity-in-discourseverymuchresemblesGee’s(2001)D-identity.
Althoughthedistinctionbetweenidentity-inpracticeandidentity-in-
discoursehasservedanumberofscholarsasausefultheoreticalframework
fortheirresearchprojects(e.g.Costley,2015;Kanno&Stuart,2011),someof
themnotethatthetermHidentities-in-practice”isabettertermconsidering
Hthemutuallyconstitutiverelationshipbetweenidentityandpractice”
(Kanno&Stuart,2011,p.240).Inthatsense,eventhediscursivelycon-
structedidentitiesareHverbalexpressionsoftheongoingmutualrelation-
shipbetweentheselfandthepracticeofateacher”(Kanno&Stuart,2011,
p.240).Thisiswhyothertermsaresuggested,suchasHenactedidentities”
insteadofidentity-in-practiceandHnarratedidentities”foridentity-in-
discourse(Kanno&Stuart,2011).

Averypromising,althoughasomewhatlesspopularframeworkisoffered
byClarke13(2009,2013),wholooksatlanguageteacheridentityformation,
especiallyitsethico-politicaldimension,asaseriousandcrucialaspectof
educationinwhichidentitycanbeconsideredinrelationtoethicsasthecare
oftheself.TranslatingFoucault’s(1977)fouraxesofrelationshiptooneself
(thesubstanceofethics,theauthoritysourcesofethics,theself-practices,andthe
telosorendpointofethics),Clarke(2009,2013)putsforwardanHidentity
work”diagramforinvestigatingongoingteacheridentity.Hisframework
consistsoffourethico-politicalaxes:thesubstanceofteacheridentity,theau-
