electorsrecordedthatthemonthlypamashadbeenchargedwithtoo

manydutiestobeabletooverseetaxcollection,andthereforethey

orderedthekahaltoappointtwotaxpayerswhowouldattendtax

collectioninturn.[39]Areservationwasmadesomewhereelsethat

neitherthemonthlypamasnoranyotherpamaswasallowedto

exemptanyonefromtaxpaymentforsometime,unlessthree

pamasimknewaboutit.[40]

InSwarzędz,themonthlypamaswasobligedtospendevery

Friday,theeveoftheSabbath,ofhisterminoﬃcewiththetrustee,

andhewasalsoauthorizedtocallinoneofthekahalmembersand

twotaxpayers,whowerenotmembersofthecommunityauthorities

(yeḥideisgulah)andwerechosenbyadraw,sothattheywouldseeto

itthatthetaxcollectionwasconductedappropriatelyandnofavors

weregiventoanybody.[41]

OnecanreadintheSwarzędzpinkasthatritualslaughterreceipts

aretobesignedbythreepamasim,andinterestinglyenough,thesame

entryalsospeciﬁestheorderinwhichtheyshouldaﬃxtheir

signaturesafterthemonthlypamas.Thiswasduetoanearlierdispute

betweentwopamasim,Avraham,sonofrebN.,andAvrahamKats,

whoofthetwoshouldhaveprecedence.[42]

Eachmonthlypamaswasobligedtomake,usuallytogetherwith

thetrustee,alistofrevenuesandexpensesmadeinhismonthinoffice

notonlyincashbutalsoingoods.ThePoznańelectorswrotedown

thatthemonthlypamashadtobeaccompaniedbythreetaxpayersin

ordertoaccepttheaccountsfromtrusteesandtaxcollectors,and

beforehehandedhisoﬃceovertohissuccessorhewouldhaveto

squaretheaccountsinaclearandtransparentway.[43]

In1652,thePoznańelectorsorderedthemonthlypamastohand

overtheaccountsforhismonthinoﬃcetoaccountsupervisors
