In1705adecisionwasmadeinSwarzędzthatontheeveofanew

monththemonthlypamaswouldconvenethekahalandaccounttoit

forhistermofoﬃce,andshouldanymemberofthekahalbeabsent,

thenhewouldbereplacedbyoutstandingpeople.Thelatterwere

calledyeḥideisgulahandthetermstoodforpeopleofmeans,with

outstandingknowledgeandothervirtues,whodidnotholdany

communitypositions.[46]Shouldthemonthlypamascontravene

theforegoingorder,thenhewouldbeobligedtocoverallexpenses

thathehadmadeinhismonthinoﬃceoutofhisownpocket.[47]It

wasalsoprescribedonseveraloccasionsthatthesquaringofaccounts

shouldbeattendedbyaccountsupervisors.[48]

Theoutgoingpamashadtosquarehisaccountsclearlysothat

thefollowingonecouldassumehispostforanothermonthlyterm.

ThePoznańelectorswarnedin1655thattheoutgoingandincoming

pamaswouldbeﬁnedifthepostwerehandedoverwithout

therequiredsquaringofaccounts.[49]Theoutgoingpamaswasalso

supposedtohandovertohissuccessorallpledgesandnoteshehadin

hispossession.

BeforePassover,thepamasimsquaredannualaccountsandthen

handedthemovertoelectors.

Thepamasimandthekahalalsoexaminedcourtcases,whichwill

bediscussedinthechapterdevotedtojudiciary.Everytrialin

theundervoievode’scourthadtobeheldinthepresenceofapamasor

anappointeeofthemonthlypamas,inPolish,akahalnik.[50]

Thelatterwassentcopiesofcourtsentencesmiedbyothercourtsthat

operatedinthecommunity(e.g.,aguildcourt[51])andhewastheone

toauthorizethecommunity’sshamestocarrytherulingintolifeby

meansofcoercivemeasuresorpenalties.
