worldandthefactthattherearecurrentlymorepeoplewhospeakatleast

Yet,translationisstillasociallymisunderstoodphenomenon.Ontheone
hand,theabilitytotranslatefromonelanguageintoanotherissocially
expectedofanybodywhocancommunicateinthetwolanguagesinques-
tion.Ontheotherhand,therearemanyvoiceswhichpointoutthatthere
aremanypublicallyavailabletranslationsofpoorqualityandinsteadof
helpingincross-culturalcommunication,theyconfusethosewhoneed
themtointeractwithotherswhoselanguagetheydonotshare.Examples
ofsuchambiguousandoddtranslationsareencounteredacrosstheworld
fromrestaurantmenutranslationstotravelinformationavailableonthe
Internet.Therearetranslationsofbookswhichareapleasuretoreadand
onerarelystopstothinkthatwhatisanenjoyablereadisinfactatransla-
tionbuttherearealsobookswhichhavebeensooddlytranslatedthatone
findsitdifficulttofollowthelineofreasoningandmightbetemptedto
blametheauthorratherthanthetranslatorwhomadeamessoftheau-
thor’sideasbyrenderingtheminathirdratherthansecondlanguage.Ob-
viouslytheremustbeabroadrangeofskillsinvolvedinproducinga
translationandtheunfortunateoutcomespointtoalackofcertainabili-
ties,competenciesandexpertise.
