translate.Byprovidingadetailedlookatwhatitmeanstoknowtwolan-
guagesthebackgroundforthedevelopmentoftranslationcompetenceis
analyzed.ThebodyofknowledgefrequentlytakenforgrantedbyTrans-
lationStudiesintacitassumptionsthatallthosewhoaspiretobecome
professionaltranslatorshavemasteredthetwolanguagesisshownasa
complexdynamicsystemofknowledgebothdeclarativeandprocedural.
Apointismadethatbilingualknowledgeisdifferentlyinternalisedby
naturalbilingualsandL2learnerswithdifferentconsequencesfortheirL2
andL1performanceaswellasfortheirtranslationperformance.Some
lightisshedontheissuesrelevanttotranslationasanactivitywhichin-
cludebilingualmemory,cross-linguisticinfluenceandtheneedforlan-
guagecontrolinthebilingualmindinwhichbothlanguagesinteractwith
oneanotherandcompetefordominance.Translationasaconsciousop-
erationrequirestakingthisdynamicinteractionundersufficientcontrolto
keepthetwolanguagessafelyapartintranslationperformance.
Chapter3looksattranslationasanaturalabilityofallbilinguals(i.e.,
everybodywhocanusetwolanguagesforcommunication).Twogroups,
naturaltranslatorsinmultilingualcommunitiesandL2learnersareana-
lyzedindetailwithreferencesprovidinganinsightintoresearchinto
translationasanuntrainedability,i.e.,translationperformedbythosebi-
linguallanguageuserswhohavenotreceivedanystructuredtraining.
Scantresearchonnaturaltranslationshowsthatthisstageonthedevel-
opmentalcontinuumoftranslationasahumanskillisworthyoffurther
investigation.Themagnitudeofthephenomenonofwhathasbecomere-
ferredtoaslanguagebrokeringprovidesavaluableinsightintotheaddi-
tionalcapacitiesneededforefficienttranslationapartfromthebilingual
foundations.Theyseemtoincludemetalinguisticabilitieswhichas
pointedoutbyMalakoffandHakuta(1991)mightinitiallyplayamore
importantrolethantranslationstrategies.AcloserlookatL2learnersact-
ingastranslatorsprovidesyetanotherperspectiveontheuntrainedability
totranslatepointingtotheimportanceofone’slanguageacquisitionhis-
toryinthedevelopmentoftranslationasahumanskill.Apointismade
thatL2translationisofinterestnotonlytothestudyoftranslationbut
alsotoSLAresearchandmethodology.AdiscussionofthebenefitsL2
learners/userscandrawfromthestructuredexposuretotranslationtasks
includinginterculturalcompetenceandmetalinguisticawarenesspointto
