Chapter4takesupthedifficultissueoftranslationcompetencewhichhas
tobeacquiredifoneisinterestedindevelopingthehumanabilitytotranslate
totheleveloftranslationexpertise.Threeofthemostrepresentativeap-
proachestotranslationcompetencearepresentedandlackofaunanimously
accepteddefinitionoftranslationcompetenceisnoted.Relyingonashared
agreementamongTranslationStudiesscholarsthattranslationcompetence
underlyingtranslationasatrainedskillisexperience-derivedknowledge,
bothdeclarativeandprocedural,anattemptismadetorelatetheexperience
oftranslatingtoTranslationCompetenceacquisition.Theconsequencesof
thelackofclearunderstandingofhowTranslationCompetenceisacquired
bringtheissueofa‘pedagogicalgap’ininstitutionalizedtranslatortraining.
Thecriticalviewsofleadingscholarsarepresentedandnewapproachesto
structuringthelearningenvironmentsoastooptimizetheprocessoflearning
translationasatrainedskillarereviewed.Finally,differentroutestotransla-
tionexpertiseareacknowledgedandaglimpseattranslationasaprofession
withitsmarketrequirementsispresented.Thedevelopmentofthetransla-
tor’sprofessionalselfislikelytoinvolveafurtherreorganizationandrestruc-
turingoftheexistingknowledgestructuresbutalsoanacquisitionofanew
professionalidentity,whicharisesfromtheawarenessoftranslationasaso-
ciallyrequiredservice.Howthereorganizationandrestructuringofknowl-
edgetakesplaceandhowithelpsadevelopingtranslatorintheactualper-
formancestillremainsunclear.
Chapter5includesmyownattempttounderstandwhattranslatorswho
havechosenacareerinlanguagetranslationlearnfromexperience.Relying
onthebodyofknowledgepresentedinthepreviouschaptersahypothesis
isputforwardthatprofessionaltranslatorsintheircourseoftranslation
competenceacquisitionlearntobuildaKnowledgeIntegrationNetwork
(KIN)foreverytranslationtasktheyperform.Drawinginsightsfrompsy-
cholinguistics,cognitivestudiesandexpertiseresearchtheoperatingprin-
ciplesbehindtheproposalofKINareexplained.Thedevelopmentalnature
ofthetranslator’sabilitytointegratealltheknowledge(declarativeand
procedural)neededtotranslateaspecifictextisdiscussedintermsofthe
differencesinapproachingthetaskoftranslatingreportedfornoviceand
