purposeoftranslation.Finally,theabilitytobuildaKnowledgeIntegration
Networkisseenfromtheperspectiveofadevelopingtranslatorperceived
asanexpertlearnerwhothroughpracticecoupledwithself-reflectionbe-
comesaSystemsIntelligentpersonandintheprocessofacquiringhis/her
translationcompetencedevelopsprofessionalself-confidence,afundamen-
talfeatureoftranslationexpertise.
Chapter6openstheempiricalpartofthebook.Aquestionnairestudy
conductedamongtranslatorsoccupyingvariouspointsonthedevelopmental
continuumoftranslationskilldevelopmentaimedatverifyingthehypothe-
sizedconceptoftheKnowledgeIntegrationNetwork.Altogether200sub-
jectsrespondedtoabatteryofquestionnairesaimedatelicitingvaliddatare-
flectingtheirviewsontranslationasaprofessionandtranslationasanactiv-
ity.The1BA(N80),2BA(N40)and2MA(N40)subjectsweretreatedas
non-professionalinformantsoccupyingearlystagesintheevolutionoftrans-
lationasahumanskillandbecauseofstudyingEnglishatuniversitylevel
(EFL)theyweretreatedaspotentialpracticingtranslators.Thegroupofpro-
fessionallyactivepracticingtranslators(N40)constitutedavaluablesource
ofdataonworkproceduresandtheprofessionaltranslator’scognitiveand
language-relatedprofile.Thedataanalysiswascarriedouttoprovideade-
scriptivesupportforthehypothesizedabilitytobuildaKnowledgeIntegra-
tionNetworkforaspecifictranslationtaskasafundamentalpartofdevelop-
ingprofessionalexpertise.
Chapter7constitutesthesecondpartofempiricalanalysiswhichveri-
fiesthehypothesizedabilitytointegrateknowledgelookingattheactual
translationprocessdata.Usingakeyloggingcomputersoftwareprogram,
Translog(JakobsenandSchou1999)dataarecollectedfromtranslators
occupyingdifferentpointsonthedevelopmentalcontinuum.Study1in-
vestigatestranslationsofthesametextperformedby2BAEFLstudents
(N8),TranslationTrainees(N8)andpracticingtranslators(N8).Study2
describesanexperimentinwhich2BAsubjects(N48)weredividedinto
twogroupswhichdifferedbyonevariable,thatofaninducedKnowledge
IntegrationNetwork.Theresultsarediscussedtoverifyresearchhypothe-
sesformulatedtoseekempiricalvalidationoftheKnowledgeIntegration
Network.
