petenceas‘acognitivesetofknowledge’,howeverisstillnotkeptclear

fromothertermsandisindeedusedassynonymouswithabilityandskill.

Thequotebelowdemonstratesthiscircularityofthethreetermsdis-

cussed,translationability,skillandcompetence:

Weassumethattranslationcompetenceisnottobeunderstoodonlyas

arepertoire,butratherasarole-specificcompetence.Inthissense,

competenceincludesnotonlythemeans(repertoire)butalsothepur-

portedresult,thatis,competenceisdefinedastheappropriateuseof

specificabilitiesaccordingtosurroundingdemands(McClelland1973),

i.e.,asagoal-orientedbehaviour.InthedomainofTranslationCompe-

tenceitincludesandspecifiesthenotionofcompetenceasability

(Alves,etal.2001:47).

Asindicatedabove,suchterminologicalconfusionallowsforassumptions

thattheremightbearelationofequalitybetweencompetenceandbeing

abletotranslate,whicheverybodywhoknowstwolanguagescando.In-

deed,everybodywhohasaccesstotwolanguagesystemscantranslatebut

theendresultofthetranslationperformancewilldifferdependingwhether

thetranslatorisrelyingonlyonthenaturalabilityorusinghis/hercon-

sciouslydevelopedcompetenceorexpertise.Thisvariabilityintranslation

performance(Séguinot1997)visibleinthequalityoftranslatedtextsisfre-

quentlyunknowntothegeneralpublicwhichhasasimplifiedviewof

translationskill.ToquoteKorzeniowskaandKuhiwczak(1994:11),“It

seemsthattranslationistheskillmostcommonlyexpectedofsomebody

whospeaksaforeignlanguage.Itisgenerallyassumedthatbeingableto

communicateinaforeignlanguagecorrespondstotheabilitytotranslate

fromonelanguageintoanother.Inmanyrespects,thisconvictionresem-

blesthewidespreadopinionaccordingtowhicheveryChinesepersonisan

excellentcook”.Tosafeguardthiskindofmisunderstanding,itisimportant

toviewthethreefrequentlyusedtermsasanevolutionarycontinuum:

Thisevolutionaryperspectivemakesitpossibletoacceptthatallpeople
