philosophy,theintellectualStefanJaworski.Heprobablyrecommended
hisstudenttoserveintheHetman’sofce.
MoststudiesindicatethatthecareerofthefutureHetmanbeganat
theKyivConsistory.OksanaProkopiukandMaximYaremenkoattempt
toilluminatethis“pre-Cossack”periodofOrlyk’sbiography,whichhas
notyetbeensufcientlyexplored

Teauthorshypothesisethatserving
asasecretaryintheconsistorywasatypeofobedience,andleadership
wasthedomainofblackclergy,

andalsoclaimthatOrlykintendedtobe
tonsuredamonk.

However,thisdidnothappenbecauseon23November
1698(accordingtotheoldorder),OrlykmarriedAnna,thedaughterof
PoltavacolonelPavelHercyk.
Fromthediaryentryof1724,inwhichOrlykthankstheLordfor26years
ofmarriage,itcanbeinferredthatthemarriagewasforloveandnotjustfor
convenience(marriagewithAnnaHercykintroducedhim,asemphasisedby
mostresearchers,totheCossackaristocracyintheLefBankofUkraine).
Later,OrlykbecamethegeneralsecretaryandaconfidantofIvanMazepa.
Inhis1937monograph,BorisKrupnytskyemphasises
:
TeUkrainianHetmanneededsuchloyalmenandappointedOrlyktothepost
ofsecretary-generaljustwhenhebegantopaymoreandmoreattentionto
CharlesXIIandStanisławLeszczyński.ItisafactthatOrlykhasbeenemployed
invarioussensitivecases.
