1.1Introduction
ThepresentchapteroffersageneraldescriptionofInternetcommunication,

Internetlanguage,andInternetforums.Theorganizationofthechapterisas
follows:theintroductorySection1.2isdevotedtotheconceptofregisterand
relatednotions,suchasdialect,sociolect,genre,andstyle;thepropercontentof
thechapterbeginswithSection1.3,whichoffersabriefdescriptionofthenotion
ofInternetlanguageandInternetcommunication;thissectioncomprisesthe
discussionofthetypesofInternetcommunication(Section1.3.1),adescription
ofgeneralfeaturesofInternetlanguage,suchasinteractivityoriconization
(Section1.3.2),andadiscussionoflinguisticfeaturesofInternettexts,suchas
theuseofemoticons(Section1.3.3).ThesubsequentSection1.4isdevotedto
thetheoreticaldescriptionoftheregisterofInternetforum.
Twopointsmustbeunderlinedhere:first,theaimofthischapterisnotto
provideadetailedaccountoflanguagevarieties(andrelatednotions),asthis
wouldclearlybeoutsidethescopeofthestudy.Second,thechapterisnotmeant
tobeadetaileddescriptionoflinguisticfeaturesofInternettextsoraspectsof
Internetcommunication.Itsaim,bycontrast,istoserveasageneralintroduction
tothedescriptionofthecorpus(Chapter3),particularlyinconnectionwiththe
questionsrelatedtothestatusofitslanguage,viz.whetheritcanbedescribed
asasociolectoraprofessionalvarietyorratherageneralvariety(Sections
3.4.6-3.4.7).
