Internetforumscanbemultimodal;whilemostoftheircontentisatextual
one,itispossibleonmostofthemtouploadpicturesandlorphotographs.Users
onthemajorityofforumscanalsopastelinkstomusicfiles,videomovies,
pictures,etc.,locatedonexternalservers,otherwebsites,etc.
Itisdifficulttopreciselystatethenumberofusersofagivenforum.Most
forumsdoprovidesuchinformation;thenumbersprovided,however,usually
includeinactiveusers.Thustheycannotbeseenascompletelyreliable;they
can,however,providegeneralinformationaboutthesizeandpopularityof
agivenforum.Itcanbegenerallystated,asNaruszewicz-Duchlińska(2009:196)
observedinconnectionwithdiscussiongroups,thatthenumberofusersisnot
stableandmayvaryperiodically.
Theaimsoftakingpartinthelifeofaforummightbeverydiverse.It
maybetreatedasameansofgatheringnewinformation,exchangingopinions,
askingforhelp,sharingone)sknowledgewithlessexperiencedusers,tryingto
persuadeotherstoone)spointofview,etc.Agivenforummayalsofunction
astheplatformforsocialrelations,whereusersspendtheirfreetime,lookfor
peoplewithsimilarexperiences,fornewfriends,etc.,cf.alsoBiberandConrad
(2009:190),whoseemanyoftheaimsofanInternetforumasbeingthesame
asthatof“aface-to-faceclubmeeting”(formoreontherolesofInternetforums,
cf.Sokół2009).
1.5Concludingcomments
TheaimofthepresentchapterwastoserveasageneraldescriptionofInternet
languageandInternetforums.Onthebasisofcertainforumsdevotedto
computers,thecorpus,uponwhichthepresentstudyisbased,hasbeencompiled
(forthedescriptionofthecorpus,cf.Chapter3).Thenextchapterwillbe
devotedtothetheoreticaldescriptionofsemanticloans,loantranslations,loan
renditions,andrelatednotions.
