1.3.1TypesofInternetcommunication
Ingeneral,thecommunicationviatheInternet,orInternetcommunication,can
bedividedintosynchronousandasynchronous(cf.Wyrwas2004b,Crystal2006,
BeisswengerandStorrer2008,Adamczyk2009,Yus2011).11Grzenia(2004a:
22-24)introduceshereanadditionalclassanddistinguishesbetweenthreemain
typesofInternetcommunication:
-conversationaltype(synchronous),alsoreferredtoaschattype,includinge.g.
variouskindsofchats,instantmessengers,suchasSkype,GaduGadu,AQQ,
etc.ThistypeofInternetcommunicationimpliesatleasttwoparticipants
exchangingmessagesinrealtime;itcanthusbeseenasanalogoustoface-
to-faceconversationand,consequently,morespontaneous(Golus2004:
33,Chyrzyński2010:81),cf.Yus,whodescribesitasoccurring“where
interlocutorsareconnectedsimultaneouslytotheNet,[ś]buildupasort
oftextualinteractivedialoguethatdisappearsassoonastheusersstopthe
connectionandswitchoffthecomputer”;asaresult,“therearenotracesof
ourpresence,noraremoreoptionsforalong-lastingformofcommunity”
(Yus2011:28);
-e-mailtype(asynchronous),includinge-mails,discussionlistsandgroupsas
wellasInternetdiscussionforums.Mostprobably,othergenres,suchasblogs,
canbeincludedhereaswell.Thistype,incontrasttothepreviousone,does
notrequirethepresenceoftwoormoreparticipantsatthesametime;they,
asYusnotes,“buildupanarchiveofinteractionsandanincreasinglycomplex
formofcommunitywherestrongercommunaltiescanbefostered”(Yus2011:
28).Asaresult,asJagodzińska(2008:139)rightlyobserves,thereisno“here
andnow”(incontrasttothesynchronoustype).Thistype,asAdamczyk(2009:
172)asserts,iseasiertoanalyze,asitisincomparablyeasiertocollectsuch
materialincomparisonwithsynchronouscommunication,whichisusually
ofprivatecharacter;
-hypertexttype,includingwebpagesandwebsites,12bothindividual,i.e.created
byanindividualperson,andnon-individual,e.g.ofcompanies,organizations,
etc.

websites(witrynyinternetowe).Thisdistinction,althoughusefulincertainstudies,isirrelevant
fromthepointofviewofthepresentbookandwillnotbediscussedindetail.
