StefanIgnargrewupinBałdrzychówintheŁęczycapoviat,in
apeasantfamily.HegraduatedhighschoolinLodzanduniver-
sityinPoznan.Hehadenteredadulthoodatatimeofeconomic
crisisandhighunemploymentandwasunderthestronginfluence
oftheGWici”RuralYouthAssociation.AnotabletraitofStefan
Ignarinthatperiodwashiscriticalandstubborndrivetoun-
derstandthefinancialmattersofagriculturalholdings,whichhe
foundinteresting.Hepossesseduniqueintellectualcapabilities.
Hewasalsodeeplydevotedtopeasantissuesandagreatpoliti-
cian,statesmanandresearcher.
Aftercompletinghisstudiesandmilitaryservice,heunsuc-
cessfullysoughtemployment,toeventuallybecomealecturerattheSolarzówUniversity
inGaćPrzeworska.Throughouttheyears1935–1936heservedasthechiefeditorofthe
GRuralEconomicLife”bi-weeklymagazinepublishedbytheLodzbranchoftheGWici”
RuralYouthAssociation,earningakeypositionamongtheradicalruralyouththanksto
hisexceptionalessaywritingskills,educationalandpedagogicalactivities.Inlateryears,
hebecamethechiefeditoroftheGWici”weeklymagazine.DuringtheNazioccupation,
hebecameacommandantoftheŁódźdistrictofPeasantBattalions.Aftertherestora-
tionofPoland’sindependence,hefirsttookupworkasateacherinaruralgymnasium
inGodzianówandlaterintheGWici”Associationagain.In1946,hebecamethePresi-
dentofitsExecutiveBoard.HewasalsothePresidentoftheExecutiveBoardofthe
PeasantSelf-HelpUnion.DuringtheunificationcongressoftheSLandPSLparties,
hewasappointedvicepresidentoftheChiefExecutiveCommittee.FollowingOctober
1956,hebecametheleaderofZSL,asitsPresident.Heheldthatpositionuntil1962,
laterreturningtothisrolein1981.
Hisservicetothestatetookformofholdingnumerouskeypositions:intheearly
1950shewastheDeputyPresidentoftheCouncilofState,heremainedamemberof
parliamentandtheConstitutionalCommissionfor24yearsandbetween1956–1969
heservedastheDeputyPrimeMinister.
Throughhisactiveparticipationinpoliticsandstatecraft,hestrivedfortheadoption
ofamorescientificapproachtoeconomicactivity.Heconductedresearchintothefunc-
tioningandfinancialeffectivenessofdifferentformsofagriculture.
Hebeganhisscientificworkin1945,attheLodzUniversityofLifeSciences,
foundedthankstotheeffortsofGWici”andhimself.Prof.Ignarwasalreadyrespected
backthen,notonlybyruralactivists,butalsoandperhapsprimarilyeconomists.
Lateron,whenhemovedtoWarsaw,hebecameinvolvedwiththeWarsawUniversity
ofLifeSciences.HeinitiatedandorganizedthecreationoftheEconomicandAgricul-
turalDepartmentandbecameitsfirsthead.Duetohisinterestinagriculturalfinance
