AGRIBUSINESSTHETERM,ITSSCOPEANDSPECIFICITY
InthecaseofPoland,acharacteristictraitofagribusinessisthequickpaceof
changes.Upuntil1990,agricultureheldadominantroleinit,bothintermsofpartici-
pationinproductionresourcesandtheproductioncreated.Agriculture’spresencein
thisperiodamountedtoa77.2%and52.5%share,respectively4.Alargershareofagri-
cultureinagribusinessresources,relativetoitsshareofproduction,arosefromalow-
eredeffectivenessoflaborandresources,asaresultofthelawsofbiologyandmarket
circumstances.Theformerlimitthegrowthofproductionintime,asperunitsofarea
andperanimal.
Asforlimitationsconcerningthesizeofagricultureproductionperunitofarea,
theyariseprimarilyfromthecharacteristicsofthesoil.Throughitsquality,location
andvariationintheseregards,soilimpactseconomicactivityanditsprofitability.These
traitsturnagriculturallandintoasourceoflandrent.AndevenAdamSmithhimself
hadnoticedthatagriculturalactivitiescarriedoutindifferentlocationsleadtodiffer-
encesinbothcostsandresults.TheseobservationswerecontinuedbyDavidRicardo,
KarlEmilMaximilianGMax”Weberandothers.DifferentialrentIiscreateddueto
differingqualityofagriculturallandanditspositioninginregardstothemarket.Dif-
ferentialrentIIisarelativebeneficialeffectarisingfromdifferencesintheintensity
ofagriculturalactivity.Anotherrelevantrentistheurbanrent,constitutingarelative
benefitgainedbylandownersinbeneficiallocations(reflectedinsubjectliteratureas
differentialrentIII).Recently,environmentalrent(differentialrentIV)isalsobeing
acknowledged5.Inthiscase,theincreasedvalueoflotsmayarisefromenvironmental
determinants,characterizedbyahighnaturalvalue,microclimate,etc.Duetotrans-
ferswithintheCommonAgriculturalPolicy,capitalrenthasappeared,implementedby
agriculturallandowners.
Capitalrentoftenexistsinconnectionwithbenefitsarisingfromadvantageouslegis-
lativesolutionsinthesphereofsocialsecuritycontributionsandtaxation.Therefore,we
mightpointoutyetanotherrentthelegislativeone.Theimplementationofrentsaris-
ingfromtheuniquetraitsofagriculturallandhasakeyimpactonthepaceofchanges
occurringwithintheagrarianstructure.Generallyspeaking,theabilitytoobtaineco-
nomicrents,andcapitalrentinparticular,hindersthetransferoflandfromsmallagri-
culturalholdingstodevelopmentalones.Therefore,theexistenceoftheserentsslows
downchangeswithinagribusinessatlarge.Agribusinessasaproductionsubsystemof
thenationaleconomyischaracterizedbycertainspecificities,namely:
Itisasubsystemproducingfoodandfood-relatedresourcesnecessaryforthe
productionofallotherproducts.
Itisasubsystemencompassingdifferentcomponents,characterizedbyavar-
iedeffectiveness,productivity,sensitivitytowardsexternalfactorsofproduction;
agriculturalproductionisparticularlysensitivetothem.Ontheonehand,unique
